A saree is symbolic of the grace, versatility, and culture of Indian women. Indian sarees are worn traditionally by women in India since old age, and it is also mentioned in the age-old mythological stories. Indian saris are a strip of unstitched cloth made of different fabrics and designs in different parts of the Indian states. Each time of conception and motifs made on them are symbolic of the culture and traditions of the particular state.
One such culturally rich sari is the Sambalpuri saree, which is made in the eastern region of India, in the state of Odisha. The ikat print is built on a silk saree which follows a feathery look and a curvilinear style with some hazy outlines.
These are produced in the western part of Odisha in the districts of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Boudh, Sonepur, and few more places. These saris are handmade, and no machine is used in the procedure of making them.
The Sambalpuri sarees picture fabulous events like the Ayodhya Vijay, Raslila, Mathura Vijay. Which is owed to the origin of 'raghurajpur Patta paintings.' These saris have different variations, and most of them are named after the place of origin.
The fabric used in making the Sambalpuri saree reflects a unique and original kind of craft which is called Baandha. The art of Baandha is designed using the images of flowers, animals, wheels, portraits and flower pods, etc. The fabric of Baandha is made using the tie-dye technique. The uniqueness of these saris lies in the fact that the patterns are reflected identically on both sides. The reason behind it is the way these saris are weaved; the thread are tied in a way that prevents the absorption of dyes and also makes the desired pattern.
The motifs made in the Sambalpuri sarees are highly intricate, and it uses multiple colors. The fabrics used in making these saris include both cotton and silk. The different weaving procedure gives the sari a slightly rough texture. These sarees mainly use colors like black, red, yellow, and green.
One can sport a simple block color blouse with these saris or wear a blouse of similar pattern like that of the sari. If the saree colors are black or blue, wear a blouse with a dull black color with designer back cut can make someone look stylish and elegant.
If you are opting for a subtle color like white or light pink, then choose a blouse with compliments the saree. One can also experiment with different cuts and tie-ups at the rear side of the blouse like tassels or artificial stone adorned ties.
Sambalpuri saris can be adorned with jewelry which matches the material of the fabric and the color of the outfit. Wear Sambalpuri silk saree along with baroque pearl jewelry will give you the royal classy look.
If you pick Sambalpuri cotton saree then matching it with terracotta jewelry necklace and heavy earrings. With a big bangle in one hand will give you an earthy beautiful look.
If you are looking for a zamindari look. Pick traditional jewelry along with a pashmina or similar type of shawl. which compliments the color of the saree will give you the desired look.
Complete your look with a traditional bag or jhola with ikkat print on it. One can even go with clutches with little design and subtle colors, which will make your overall Sambalpuri saree look a hit.
Sambalpuri sarees are pure hand woven sarees which is made after a lot of hard work and creativity. The bright colors and unique designs make them one of its kind. These saris are a perfect fit for any occasion and will complete the traditional look with elegance.
